I’ve been spending almost every day at the High Court in Cape Town as the official court illustrator for the Shrien Dewani trial.
Each day has been a learning curve, getting to grips with the unfamiliar environment of wood, black robes and formalities, “All rise for the judge!” for example. Although the trial has its somber and depressing moments, I’ve been enjoying the time drawing and observing, and have found it fascinating listening to the press debates. Probably the only challenge has been finding good spots to draw from in order get a variety of compositions and views. On one of the days I sat up in the gallery and drew from above, using binoculars to find detail. It was quite strange looking at someone so close up.
